Content Overview:
Kindergarten: The standard is living things have physical traits and behaviors, which influence their survival. At this grade level, providing exposure through personal observation and stories to a large variety of living things is required. The focus is not on naming the parts of living things, but associating through interaction and observation that living things are made of parts, and because of those parts, living things can do specific things. The scientific explanations of how those parts function will come later.
First Grade: The first grade standard for life science is that living things survive only in environments that meet their needs. The students will be looking at habitats that are specific to Ohio. The main habitat components include food, water, cover and space. Students will be investigating those components to determine what does and does not qualify as food, water, cover, and space.
Second Grade: The second grade standard for life science is living things function and interact with their physical environments. Living things cause changes in the environments where they live; the changes can be very noticeable or slightly noticeable, fast or slow. The students will be looking at animals in Ohio habitats. They will look at the animal's life cycles and the difference that these animals make in their Ohio habitat. The whole group focus will be on bees and then the students will have a focus animal that they will research and share with the class.
Third Grade: In third grade, the standard is plants and animals have life cycles that are part of their adaptations for survival in their natural environments. Within this standard the students will look closely at the different characteristics and adaptations different animals have in order to survive in their particular environment. For this concept, they will explore the different Ohio habitats and the animals that belong in each one. This will help show the students how animals are different and each need different things in order to survive and thrive.
